Healthy Inspiration Starts with 'Healthy'...or does it?

Come explore what 'Healthy' really means!

Before creating a Healthy Inspiration, let's define 'Healthy' in 3-4 ways.

Dictionary.reference.com notes 'health' comes from an olde English phrase 'haelp' meaning "wholeness, being whole, sound or well."

The Medical Dictionary says it is

  1. The overall condition of an organism at a given time.
  2. Soundness, especially of body or mind; freedom from disease or abnormality.

The World English Dictionary defines 'Healthy' as:

  1. Enjoying good health
  2. Functioning well or being sound: 'the company's finances are not very healthy'
  3. Conducive to health; salutary
  4. Indicating soundness of body or mind: a healthy appetite
  5. Informal: considerable in size or amount: a healthy sum

The Primary Dictionary defines 'Healthy' as:

  1. Possessing or enjoying good health or a sound and vigorous mentality: a healthy body; a healthy mind.
  2. Pertaining to or characteristic of good health, or a sound and vigorous mind: a healthy appearance; healthy attitudes.
  3. Conducive to good health; healthful: healthy recreations.
  4. Prosperous or sound: a healthy business.
  5. Informal: fairly large: I bought a healthy number of books.

So, What is 'Healthy'?

Fitness and Wellness Tips are just the start...enjoying your Well-Being is Awesome!

As a doctor they taught us 'free of disease'.  If we cured their pneumonia, they were healthy again.  However, I have come to see that absence of disease does not make you healthy!


That is where the term 'Wellness' has been helpful.

Dictionary.com defines Wellness as

  1. The quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.
  2. An approach to healthcare that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life, as opposed to emphasizing treating diseases.

Our body is AMAZING!  It has the ability to fight disease all by itself (sometimes with a little help), and can carry us into outer space.  The infinite number of checks and balances inside us maintain a 'well-oiled machine'!  I do not believe we have to know all of them, (like I don't know exactly how all the parts of my truck operate!)  However, like a truck, we need maintenance to allow us to run for a long time in top condition.  Just because the truck is running doesn't mean it is 'healthy'.

I believe it is Healthy and Wellness!

Healthy

  • Aggressively scanning for and treating problems
  • Returning to health when ill
  • Not ignoring small 'knocks in the engine'
  • Being smart to avoid anything that can harm the system

Wellness

  • On-purpose maintenance to keep us running well
  • Incorporate fitness and wellness tips into our lifestyle...little tweaks that can actually improve our current state of wellness

It's BOTH!


Wellness Brings Well-Being

Wellness brings a sense of relative harmony, peace and strength to:

A Personal Sense of SPICESS

  1. Spiritual Well-Being
  2. Physical Well-Being
  3. Intellectual Well-Being
  4. Creative Well-Being
  5. Emotional Well-Being
  6. Shape-Up Well-Being
  7. Social / Interpersonal Well-Being

A Whole Society's Sense of

  1. Family Well-Being
  2. Financial Well-Being
  3. Environmental Well-Being
  4. Work-Place Well-Being
  5. Cultural Well-Being

But Wait...there is a Bigger Goal!

Having a 'healthy inspiration' can be the catalyst to get the engine running...

Obtaining great health and fitness is admirable...

...yet there is a greater goal!  My truck may look good in the driveway and idle with a perfect blend of fuel...but that is not my truck's purpose!

Your health and well-being is ultimately a sophisticated set of tools:

  • Used to carry out your purpose in life with passion
  • Enjoyed while they enrich your journey…every day.

(Unfortunately, I personally admit I have been accomplishing my purpose in life while being unhealthy…yuck.  I have a lot more to give and vow to do it Healthy and Well!)


A Thought on the Length of Life...

We have never been promised tomorrow…so being healthy and well can increase your life span but not guarantee it.  I am not sure the goal is to live to 100 years old.  I believe it is obtaining and maintaining a state of SPICESS harmony that frees us to enjoy life on earth as it was meant to be.  In the time we are alive, we can live with purpose and enjoy the journey! 

(There are some things that are beyond our control, like genetics and natural disasters, yet most of the quality of our lives is within our control!)

Each of our journeys will be different, and that is an exciting part of getting to be human…yet we all have the same ‘need’ to be healthy!
