Why a Free Body Fat Calculator?

Use this Body Fat Calculator because it correlates with better wellness and fitness than your body weight or body mass index (BMI) alone.

  • Two people with the same body weight and height can have completely different levels of body fat yet one would be considered much healthier.
  • Likewise, as you progress in your health and fitness exercises, you could actually lose muscle mass if you haven't balanced your nutrition with exercise well.  You can follow the change in both fat content and lean body mass!

How to do the Skinfold Method

Body Fat Calipers measure the skin fold thickness in millimeters

You will need a set of calipers that can be purchased online (Amazon) for about $15.00 or so.  They literally measure the amount of skin they can gently pinch between them.  The results are placed in the chart above (Click on Skinfold) to give a more accurate answer to your percent body fat.

Here is a great video snippet of how to use calipers for men.  (Sorry women, there are sites out there but not at this quality level that I know.  Message me and I will add it!)

It's not easy, so follow these steps to ensure the most accuracy:

  • Follow the instructions that come with the fat calipers carefully.
  • Identify the anatomic location of the skinfold.  For consistency, take all your measurements on the right side of the body.
  • Grasp the skinfold firmly with the thumb and index finger of the left hand.
  • Holding the calipers perpendicular to the site, place the pads of the calipers approximately 1⁄4 inch from the thumb and forefinger.
  • Approximately one or two seconds after the trigger has been released, read the dial to the nearest 0.5 mm.
  • Wait 15 seconds and repeat the same measurement again.
  • Continue to take measurements until two measurements vary by less than 1-2 mm.
  • It's important that you measure in exactly the same spot each time.

Use your actual change in body fat percentage to see a pattern or trend rather than relying on exact measurements from your fat calipers.

Other Ways to Calculate Percent Body Fat

There are several kinds of Body Fat Calculators:

  • The one included here which takes measurements and then gives you a great estimate.
  • Specialized bathroom scales (Body Fat Analyzer Scales) which use a Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA) signal to calculate it for you in your own home.  I personally use Tanita and like them.
  • The 'dunking booth' method which is the most accurate and most difficult to accomplish.  Only specialized training facilities have this equipment.

Finally...

Congratulations!  You have successfully negotiated one of the harder calculators!  However, it is one of the most important...because it gives you more information from month to month than almost any other.

to use every month!
